You might be thinking "how can I get skills
if I can't get a job and how can I get a job without skills?" Part
of the solution is to find other ways to get the skills you need.
In
School
School is a great place to start building skills. Get involved by joining a
club or starting a club, becoming a member of a team, or taking part in school
committees. These activities will help you develop your Essential, Transferable,
and Personality skills!
Volunteering
This is one of the best ways to develop new skills and build confidence! Employers
are always impressed by volunteering experiences listed on a resume. Finding
a volunteer position can be just as demanding as finding a paid job, often
requiring a resume, interview and training.
There are many local and national organizations
that need volunteers as well as community groups within your area.
Remember that you control how much time you can offer. Some ideas:
- Animal Hospitals
- Churches
- Family & Friends
- Fire Departments
- Food Banks
- Libraries
- Museums
- Nursing Homes

Find a Mentor
Mentors are generally experienced or older individuals who provide teaching,
guidance, and support. They can be family, friends, business people, fellow
employees, just about anybody including famous or historical personalities.
A mentor acts as a role model, helping you to
focus on your objectives. Many successful people can identify one
or more other people who have had a positive impact on their lives.

site to learn more about mentors!
